The founder of Ethereum once said that he created Ethereum after his beloved World of Warcraft character was tampered with by centralized developers, awakening him to the “horrors centralized services can bring.”
Vitalik Buterin played World of Warcraft from 2007 to 2010 but decided to quit after the game’s producer, Blizzard, weakened the “beloved Siphon Life spell of the warlock” which made him cry himself to sleep.A year later, he discovered Bitcoin and realized the technology it brought was exactly what he wanted. Biography of Vitalik Buterin
Vitalik Buterin was born in Kolomna, Moscow Oblast, Russia on January 31, 1994. He lived in Russia until the age of six when his parents migrated to Canada in search of better employment opportunities.
He was recognized as a gifted child at a very young age, placed in a program for gifted children in grade three of elementary school, and he was drawn to mathematics and programming from an early age.
He was also interested in economics, and he could add three-digit numbers in his head twice as fast as other children his age, showing the potential he had to his parents and teachers.
He attended the University of Waterloo after completing high school, where he also worked as a research assistant for cryptographer Ian Goldberg – the co-creator of Off-The-Record Messaging and a board member of the Tor Project.
A turning point in his life came in 2010 while playing his favorite game, World of Warcraft, and this experience led him to join the crypto community after becoming disillusioned with current centralized technologies.
Buterin first heard about Bitcoin from his father in 2011, and he became increasingly interested in the field until he established Bitcoin Magazine by the end of 2011.
As his interest and work in cryptocurrency grew, Buterin dropped out of university in 2014, receiving a $100,000 grant from the Thiel Fellowship to work full-time on Ethereum. He first introduced his concept of Ethereum in a Whitepaper in 2013, which garnered much attention and led to the project’s launch in January 2014. The Ethereum platform was publicly released in July 2015, after several beta versions and stressful testing.
